The bottle says you are getting 550mg of Potassium Gluconate, however, careful reading of the back of the bottle shows you are actually getting only 90mg of potassium gluconate, the rest being filers. Ninety milligrams is on 3% of the RDA even according to the bottle, which means you would have to take 33 tabs to meet the MDA, if that was your only source of K. Another source says the RDA is 4700mg, in this case you would need 52 tablets. Don’t buy this thinking you are getting a significant amount of K. Dean Robinson DDS, MA, BS.

Deceptive and possibly illegal advertising, December 2, 2010

I read the 2 previous reviews (one positive and one negative). I couldn’t quite understand the negative review. Now I do. I would give this 0 stars if I could.

This is advertised as 550 mg of potassium gluconate. I wondered why the reviewer was furious about the small amount (90 mg) of potassium in the tablet. I figured with 550 mg I would be set.

If you notice, there is an image of the front of the bottle, but not the back.

It turns out that 550 mg of potassium gluconate is equivalent to only 90 mg of actual potassium which is about 2% of the daily recommended amount (this is shown on the nutritional label on the back of the bottle). This is the same amount that you get in any mulitvitamin or about 1/4 of a cup of orange juice. So this is not a higher level of potassium for someone trying to increase their intake.

In my opinion this is just deceptive. Other brands available on amazon openly state the amount of potassium (Member’s Mark and Spring Valley to name two). At least then you know what you are getting.

Even though this purchase was less than $10, I am sending it back just on principle.

Legally, K supplements can only be 3%., December 5, 2011

The US government only allows OTC potassium supplements to be 3% of RDA, so in most cases any potassium supplement is a waste of money if you need to boost your RDA significantly. Diet is pretty much the only way to get more K without a prescription supplement. If you want to get more potassium without major dietary changes, look into culinary herbs. Parsley, chervil, and celery seed all have significant amounts of potassium in them, and probably other herbs do as well. Do a little googling and you’ll see what I mean.

After getting frustrated with supplements and doing some research, I started putting parsley on every dish I could possibly put it on, trying to get at least a couple of tablespoons per day total, along with regularly eating potassium rich whole foods like sweet potatoes, spinach, chard, broccoli, navy & lima beans, avocados, and bananas. Tea and coffee are also apparently pretty good sources, although diuretic. Still, I now drink a mug of tea in the morning, then drink water and homemade lemonade the rest of the day.

If you’re looking for potassium for leg cramps, also look into magnesium. 400 mg of magnesium citrate daily took care of chronic charley horses for me, and after a few weeks of taking it regularly skipping a dose was not a problem. If skipping a dose of a mineral is a problem, you simply are not getting enough of it, because the body stores minerals. Serum and tissue levels should not suffer from a day or even a few days of no intake. In other words, if skipping a dose causes symptoms, you need more than you’re getting from that daily dose.

The modern American diet does not lend itself to getting adequate amounts of micronutrients, especially potassium and magnesium, which leads to all manner of illness, particularly problems with high blood pressure. It’s worth it to pay attention to your intake of these nutrients and figure out the most expedient ways to get them. Good luck.

I was getting light headed from time to time after switching over to a paleo diet. After some research I came to the conclusion that I needed to add more potassium and sodium to my diet so I ordered Spring Valley Potassium. I take three tablets in the morning and two more in the evening. I have noticed a decrease in light headedness, it has not completely disappeared but it certainly has diminished. My only complaint, and this seems to be the case for all potassium supplements, is the dosage. At only 99mg per pill (only 3% of RDA) you really have to take a boat load of pills each day to really have any affect.

The doctor said the diuretics I am taking for my blood pressure are flushing the potassium out of my system. He told me to eat more bananas. I think I need a different doctor, but that is another story. I started taking these supplements and at the next blood test, my potassium is right where it should be. Good price, easy to swallow and now part of my daily pill set. Now I can have bananas when I want, not as a necessity for life.

I have used these vitamins before and liken them to a banana in a capsule. Potassium and Magnesium are very effective in reducing lactic acid buildup. This should help keep you from going anaerobic in highly aerobic activities. I use them for long bike rides to keep that “dead” feeling out of my legs. Used to use them for weightlifting in my younger years and found them to be effective for that also. Remember that everything you can get in vitamins can also be obtained through proper diet, but it is easer to carry a couple of these on a long bike ride than a half-dozen bananas (though I also carry one or two of those for calories).

I was hesitant to order these from Amazon given a few reviews that indicated that the bottles had broken during shipping. Sure enough, when I got the two-pack (also shipped with a book), one of the bottles was broken. To Amazon’s credit, they are replacing the bottle for free, and not requiring that I go through the hassle of returning the broken one. Why Amazon would toss two glass bottles in a box, padded by only a few pillow packs, is beyond me. Other vitamin stores that I have ordered from online have packed their product much more securely. You may want to consider this problem when ordering, but don’t let it stop you from buying this excellent product (from the retailer of your choice).

I got this because I do a lot of cardio and lift weights. I was always cramping to the point of screaming. I was told Potassium avoids this. I tried bananas, but how long can you eat bananas before you get sick of them? :) . So I tried this, I take it a twice a day and no more cramps! I also read that you reduce the chances of heart desease by 60% with these minerals. So it’s a win/win.
