’60 day shred’ blows any other workout DVD out of the water…, October 11, 2010

…if you know how to work it!!

These 3 workouts (level 1 through 3) are fantastic as they each take about 27 minutes including warm up and cool down, but they are highly intense and you will see results for sure after about 7 to 10 times through. All you need is 3 -5 lbs dumbbells and a mat. You are getting a great cardio workout that boosts your cardiovascular system in no time while building lean muscle simultaneously. Yes, there are only 3 minutes of abs in each workout, but your abs are called into action throughout many of the other moves as well. There are a lot of plank exercises, specially in level 2 and 3, and they alone work your abs far better than any crunch, so no worries about your abs being shortcut here!

This DVD doesn’t include any instructions on how to use these workouts, other than a vague suggestion to keep working on one level daily till you are ready to move up to the next level. I have an ACE certified trainer license, and I knew right from the start that this wouldn’t work for me. I am 40 and already in somewhat decent shape, I started on 127 lbs on a 5’7″ frame. I have practiced power yoga for about 5 years now but recently found myself doing it only once a week for maintenance, and after gaining a little weight a felt I had to step it up a notch.

As there is a lot of jumping and plyometrics involved in the 30 day shred, I am doing these workouts every other day to protect my joints and give my muscles a chance to recover and rebuilt. I think doing these every day will backfire on you and sabotage results unless you are already really strong and in tip top shape. The last thing you need is injury or burn out half way through. Remember, more is not always better! To avoid boredom and keep my mind and muscles guessing, I also rotate through the levels. I never do one level two times in a row, let alone 10 times like suggested. Don’t be intimidated by the more advanced levels, just keep modifying and do what you can. Level 2 is more strength oriented and level 3 is more about cardio, it makes sense to change things up. After six weeks I am still exited about every workout, and I haven’t gotten bored yet one second.

If you need to loose a lot of weight, throw in some moderate intensity low impact cardio on the in between days, and don’t forget to clean up your diet – eat 4-6 times a day, practice portion control and avoid hydrogenated / trans fat and high fructose corn sirup like the plague!!!

What I love so much about this DVD is that it helped me to push into a new fitness level and provided me with an enormous boost of confidence. I love to watch my abs shaping and my whole body getting stronger, and I am inspired to get back into teaching and finally going after my yoga teacher certificate. I kept pushing that off due to low back problems, but now I feel I am strong enough to make it through.

If you need a good boost of motivation, I recommend reading “The Body Fat Solution: Five Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight” by Tom Venuto, that should keep you on track no problem, very inspiring! The Body Fat Solution: Five Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight

And beginners remember: quality over quantity, do this every other day and then give it your all! Be good to your body, don’t punish it for years of neglect and overeating by overexercising or starving it, instead train it, shape it, fuel it with the right foods, and watch the magic happen….. :-)

I bought this Jillian Michaels DVD for $4 through instant digital download… Very intense, thorough, 20 minute workout consisting of three circuits of strength, cardio and abs exercises. I love the fact that I can play this on the TV or on my laptop anywhere and anytime I want. I recommend this DVD to everyone and anyone interested in losing weight and getting in shape. After day 5 I did feel stronger and it was getting easier although I thought I was going to drop dead on day 1. Now on day 10 I have already lost an inch off my waist and hips! Can’t wait for day 30!!

While I loved her most recent workouts (Yoga Meltdown and Shred it with Weights), they were very different in terms of her traditional style. 6 Week Six-Pack reminds me exactly why I started doing her workouts in the first place. It is very reminiscent of 30-Day Shred and Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, with a mix of traditional exercises and some I’ve never seen before. She blends weight training and cardio exercises, all of which focus on the abs in this case. She explains why crunches alone don’t work–you must blast off the fat over your abs with cardio in order for them to show. You never stop moving in this DVD, and you’ll start to sweat quickly. It’s only about 35 minutes, so it’s definitely easy to fit in regardless of your daily schedule. If you want a quick but hardcore way to get ripped, this is it!

Give it the goods, get results, March 29, 2011

At 26 years old and nearly six feet tall, I should be a shapely Amazon of a gal, but I’m not. A lack of portion control on my part and a full time job reviewing video games has lead to a physique that’s not only unflattering, but unhealthy.

Over the course of months of exercise using Jillian’s DVDs, I lost weight DRAMATICALLY. (To give you an idea, I went from a size 28 down to a size 16. Keep in mind I’m six foot tall here.) There was no magic, no bull, just hard work, encouragement, and inspiration. The thing about Jillian is that while she’s earned and deserves her reputation for being a tough trainer, she’s not an unpleasant one. There’s just something about her I respond well to; she’s firm but fair during her workouts, and her enthusiasm for what she’s doing is infectious.

Unfortunately, late last year, in addition to getting complacent, my husband and I were also hammered by weeks where nothing seemed to go right and we had to deal with one calamity after another… a burst water main, our car breaking down (repeatedly), the declining health of a family member… it just went on and on, and long story short, I fell into depression and packed nearly all the weight back on. (I was back to a size 22.) To say I was embarrassed was an understatement; I felt ashamed of myself, that I had let not only myself but my husband down, and instead of getting back on ye olde proverbial horse, I just made things worse.

Four weeks ago I had enough. For four weeks solid, I have done an hour of exercise every day (30 Day Shred and 6 Week Six Pack) and I’ve already lost over twenty pounds. That was the worst part; getting back on the scale for the first time in months and seeing how far I’d let myself go. The work is hard, but I feel better than I have in years… more alert, more cheerful, more energetic. I haven’t put myself on a strict diet other than the “Don’t Eat Like a Lunatic” diet; controlled portions and food I prepare myself from scratch with a lot of vegetables and grains.

My goal has never been to fit into a size two. I just want to get healthier, feel better about myself, and get strong, so that if I ever need to, I dunno… wrestle a bear into submission or something I’ll be ready. (Oh, you laugh now, but you can never predict when a bear will need wrasslin’.) I have no doubt that if I keep it up with Jillian, I’ll get back to the way I was before (and then some) eventually. Her workouts make me feel good and good about myself; I don’t have to force myself to do them anymore, and every time I step on the scale and see how the numbers are going down, it’s like a little present to myself. If you have the dedication, and if you respond well to being challenged and pushed by someone who isn’t going to coddle you, then you should definitely give Jillian’s workouts a try.

The thing to remember is all trainers are not equal for every person. While I will personally tell you that for me, I found Jillian to be extremely likable and motivational, you might wind up disagreeing. Don’t get discouraged. Keep your head up, your body moving, and remember that there’s always another well-toned fish in the sea waiting for you.

This amazing DVD by Jillian Michaels is a 50 minute workout, including warm-up and cooldown, that includes innovative toning moves to target trouble spots. While not for the true beginner, I think this workout would be good for all levels, because she shows modifications for beginners and advanced exercisers (although sometimes not until halfway through the set). Also, you move at a slightly faster pace throughout, so you get a cardio benefit from this workout as well, although its’ main focus is toning your body into great shape. The circuit nature of the workout means that you continue to burn more calories even after the workout is over.

The workout is composed of seven 6-minute circuits that leave no muscle unworked. You can choose to do the entire 40 minute circuit or just select the body parts you want to focus on so you can focus on your “problem areas”. Each of the circuits consists of 5 different exercises that you do for 30 seconds each, then repeat the entire sequence for a total of 2 sets of each move. Jillian has a lot of unique, effective compound moves (compound means that you work the upper and lower body at the same time). She uses 3 lb. weights and a mat for the workout but you could adjust the amount of weight to suit your needs and use a blanket if you don’t have a mat. I’ve included a breakdown of all the moves below:

Warmup: Basic marching in place, jumping rope (no rope needed), arm circles, skaters (simulate speed skating) and jumping jacks. Then you repeat the entire sequence for a complete five minutes.

    Circuit #1- Shoulder & Legs
    - Squat with Shoulder Press
    - Backwards Lunge with Side Shoulder Raise (repeat on other leg)
    - Chair Squat with Front Shoulder Raise
    - Front Shoulder PressOuts

    Circuit #2- Chest & Abs
    - Chest Press with a Crunch
    - Chest Fly with Double Leg Raise
    - Bicycle Crunches
    - Squirms (lying down with knees bent. lift head and shoulder blades off ground and alternate bending to the side and tapping your heels).
    - PushUp

    Circuit #3- Biceps & Butt
    - Deadlift with Hammer Curl
    - Static Squat with Concentration Curl
    - Front Lunge with Wide Grip Curl (repeat on other leg)
    - Side Lunge with Biceps Curl

    Circuit #4- Thighs & Triceps
    - Chair Pose with Triceps Kickback
    - Sumo Squat with Overhead Triceps Press
    - Surrender (step back and down to kneeling position then stand up again)
    - Forward Lunge with Triceps Pushback (repeat on other leg)

    Circuit #5- Core
    - Double Crunches
    - Twisting Plank
    - Plank with ToeTaps (repeat with other leg)
    - Windshield Wipers (lying down lift both legs and move from side-to-side)

Circuit #6- Upper Body & Core
    - Plank with Back Rows
    - Superman
    - Scissor Kicks
    - Pelvic Thrusts (repeat on other leg)

Circuit #7- Lower Body & Core
    - Side Plank
    - Side Lying Leg Raise
    - Inner Thigh Raise
    - Donkey Kicks
    - Fire Hydrant with Kick

Then relax with a nice cooldown.

Overall, out of the over 200 workout DVDs I own this is one of the best and I highly recommend it for great results. Jillian is motivating without being too peppy and cues well. If you stick with this workout you’ll be ready for short summer shorts and bikinis in no time at all. Enjoy! :)

I am a huge fan of the Jillian Michael’s approach to fitness. I used her Shred 30 program and lost 29 pounds in two months by doing the workouts and following the diet recommended on her website. Let me start by saying I am not one of these people who just “LOVES” to workout. I do it because I need change. I tried this workout yesterday as it is available on Exercise TV/On Demand and I have to tell you, it was the most transformational exercise experience I have ever had. Jillian’s coaching and motivational speak are reverberating in my head even now. For this workout you will need 3 to 5 pound weights and about an hour (trust me this hour is worth it). She starts with 5 minute warm up that is cardio and dynamic stretching infused. SHe cools down with a yoga style static stretch that is just wonderful. There are roughly (six) 7 minute segments in which you do about 5 powerful arm and leg focused or ab focused work. The intensity of the arm, ab and leg work basically guaranteed me that I am going to see the results I want to see over the next two months. I usually dont feel a burn in my glutes and hips which are a real trouble spot for me, did not have that problem this time. Working out is not really my thing, as much as wanting results and knowing I have to do it in order to get it, but the strength and euphoria I felt after doing this workout is indescribable. I recommend this to anyone who wants to believe in themselves and begin transforming themselves into the person they wish they were. This comes with the highest recommendation I can offer. I will post updates as I continue the program. GET THE DVD, its the least you could do for yourself.

I own all of Jillian’s DVDs, so when this one and it’s companion DVD came out, I ordered them immediately.

This one is like “Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism” but the circuits are weights based. At about an hour long, she has you run through 5 exercises 2 times a circuit and most are with weights in hand. Towards the middle, she does matwork for the abs (some with weights!) and in the last circuit she does old school matwork for legs and glutes.

This kicked my butt in a good way. I was sweaty and tired at the end. I completed it, but having to modify some exercises, so now I have something to work towards.

Having owned so many of Jillian’s DVDs, I was worried she would use the same exercises over and over but she keeps it really fresh! She has a lot of exercises I have never seen or done before and all I can say is WOW! She does this exercise called “The Surrender” Oh. My. Goodness. It is super hard and I had to stop. It’s also a little hard on the knees. Again, one of the ones I have to work towards.

I can definitely see this DVD transforming your body and making you more and more toned. A great workout and so worth it!
